Chinese New Year Makeup Ads in Malaysia (2027)
How Malaysian makeup and cosmetics brands win Chinese New Year on 6-7 February 2027: shade-independent gift sets, limited editions, labelling and lead times.
Updated December 2026 · Xanny Lee, CEO
Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February and Sunday 7 February in Malaysia, and makeup sells in the fortnight before it as a packaging event rather than a formula one. The buyer is usually giving the product away and cannot match a shade, so the offers that clear are shade-independent: a labelled brush set, a brush cleaner, a palette, or a single-shade lip product in a box that reads as a finished gift in the first frame. Settle the outer box before the shoot, because a cosmetic sold in Malaysia is notified rather than approved, and the notification holder carries full responsibility for how it is advertised (NPRA FAQ on the control of cosmetic advertisements, November 2025). Have content indexed by early December 2026, put creative live in mid-January 2027, and treat Friday 5 February as the last day a gift can be handed over in person.
The makeup that sells hardest in the fortnight before Chinese New Year is not bought by the person who will wear it. It is bought by a niece for an aunt, a daughter-in-law for a mother-in-law, a colleague for the office exchange. That buyer cannot pick a shade, does not know an undertone, and is not shopping for a claim. She is shopping for an object that looks worth giving before it has even been opened. The festival lands on Saturday 6 February and Sunday 7 February 2027, which pulls the handover forward to the Friday and puts the courier cut-off in the last days of January. This page is for the makeup brand, the beauty reseller and the retailer planning that February: what a gift buyer will risk her money on, what makes a limited edition worth its price, what has to be settled on the box before the photographer arrives, and where every date sits.
The 2027 cosmetics gift clock: two buying moments, one handover date
Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February and Sunday 7 February, both national public holidays, with a further holiday published for Monday 8 February in most states. Kedah is the exception on that Monday and marks Awal Ramadan 1448 instead, as does Johor. Treat every one of those as a published date rather than a fixed one. The lunar calendar walks about eleven days earlier each year, Islamic dates are moon-sighted, and the binding version is the federal and state gazette, so confirm the list in December before you commit budget (dates checked against the Malaysia Public Holidays calendar, August 2026). A gift category does not sell evenly across that run-up. It sells in two bursts, and they want different ads. The first buyer is the planner. She starts looking in December, decides in the first half of January, and is buying a specific thing she has already pictured handing over. She reads the piece list, the price and the delivery promise, in that order. She is the reason content has to be indexed by early December 2026, weeks before any creative goes live, because her research happens in a search box rather than in a feed. The second buyer is racing the courier, and she is a different person on the same account. Three names left, no time, one requirement: it has to arrive. For her the ad is a logistics document. The last order date, the states you can still reach, whether there is a collect-in-store option and whether the thing is actually in stock matter more than the story does. Between the two sits the handover. Because the festival lands on a Saturday, the travelling starts on the Thursday and Friday, so Friday 5 February is the last day a gift can be put into somebody's hands in person. Courier cut-offs land before that, in the closing days of January, and marketplace sellers begin shutting for the holiday around the same time. A beautiful box that arrives on the 6th arrives after the person it was meant for has already gone. So run two flights rather than one long ramp. Object-led and price-led creative from mid-January for the planner. A separate, plainer set of ads from the last week of January for the woman watching the clock, with the cut-off date in the frame instead of at checkout. Weight the heaviest spend across that second stretch, and only publish a last order date you are willing to honour, because this is the one category where missing it by a day makes the product worthless.
The buyer is not the wearer, so sell the object
A Chinese New Year beauty purchase is usually made for somebody else, and that single fact rewrites the brief. The person paying cannot answer the question this category normally leads with. She does not know her sister-in-law's foundation shade, her aunt's undertone, or whether her cousin already owns that lipstick. Shade evidence is the strongest asset a Malaysian makeup advertiser has for eleven months of the year, and in this fortnight it is close to useless, because there is no face in front of her to match. So sell what a stranger can buy safely. The Malaysian makeup ads collected on this page are already full of those objects, festival or not. Brush & Co runs a full-face brush set with every brush labelled, an F58 angled concealer brush, and a lavender Brush Wash that cleans brushes and sponges. SEPHORA runs single Make Up For Ever brushes with free shipping attached. None of them need a skin tone. A tool has no wrong answer in it: nothing expires, nothing reacts, and nobody has to pretend to like the colour. A labelled set goes one better and answers the giver's real anxiety, which is not knowing what she is handing over. Single-shade products behave the same way once the choice has been made for her, the way Azarine Cosmetic Malaysia presents its Tinted Lippie Cake in shade 01 Cream Puff rather than as a range to pick from. Then let the box carry the ad. Open on the pack closed, exactly as it will look in the recipient's hands, because that is the moment she is imagining when she decides. If the set ships ready to give, with an outer sleeve, a ribbon or a gift note, say so in the ad rather than three scrolls down the product page, because wrapping is the chore she is quietly dreading. Keep the price legible in half a second and put the last order date beside it. Then take the risk off her. A published exchange window, a stated delivery date and a receipt that hides the price are worth more here than another five percent off, because a gift buyer is not optimising for cost. She is optimising for not being embarrassed in front of her family. The office exchange deserves its own ad for the same reason. It arrives with a budget everybody has already agreed on, usually a modest one, and the ad that names a price point and says plainly that this clears it will beat the ad that makes her do the arithmetic herself.
Price a makeup gift set where the giver can judge it
A gift is judged twice. Once by the woman paying, who needs it to look like it cost what it cost, and once by the person opening it in front of relatives. Both happen before anybody has used the product, which is why the price and the contents have to be legible inside the ad rather than on the product page. Start from the size of the wallet. The Department of Statistics Malaysia's Household Expenditure Survey Report 2024, released on 8 October 2025, puts mean monthly household consumption expenditure at RM5,566. That covers everything a household spends in a month: food, rent, transport, school shoes. A RM199 gift box is a visible line in that month, and it lands in the same fortnight the household is also buying oranges, new clothes and ang-pao. So a festive set is a considered purchase for most buyers, and the ad has to survive being considered. That is not an argument for pricing low. It is an argument for showing the arithmetic. Name each item, show the material and the finish instead of describing them, put the piece count where the eye lands first, and set the price beside the contents so it can be judged rather than guessed. A gift buyer will spend more than she would on herself, because the price is also a statement about the relationship. She will only do it when she can see what she is handing over. Notice what does not travel here. Percentage mechanics are built for the woman restocking her own drawer. Choice Global's buy two, get 5% off on Julystar loose face powder is a good ad aimed at somebody who already knows which shade she wants twice over, and it does nothing for a woman buying one box for her aunt, who is not comparing unit prices. The same trap catches the category's strongest claim ads. Aroce'b sells a one-step foundation that replaces five products and TRUU sells a tinted cream that replaces an hour of makeup. Both are excellent arguments to a self-buyer and weak ones to a giver, because both ask her to bet on a face she cannot see. The limited edition is the one product that escapes the arithmetic, because there the object is the value. Flower Knows Cosmetics advertises a collection by name in Malaysia rather than by ingredient, which is why a collection can be asked for at a counter and searched for in March. Three things make that work: lead with the collection name, put a date on the drop, and be straight about the quantity. Say the number if it is genuinely limited. Sell the design instead of faking the scarcity if it is not.
The box is the product, and the label is part of the box
Packaging-led selling runs into a rulebook the formula-led ads mostly ignore, so start with what a Malaysian cosmetic is in law. It is notified, not approved: a declaration made by a named Cosmetic Notification Holder under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetic Regulations 1984, following the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive procedure Malaysia adopted on 1 January 2008, valid for two years. Nobody vets it in advance. Malaysia's open catalogue of notified cosmetic products, published from NPRA and Ministry of Health sources on data.moh.gov.my, held 241,159 products from 7,476 companies when counted in July 2026. Pre-approval was never going to exist at that scale. What exists instead is liability after the fact, and it sits on the notification holder. NPRA's FAQ on the control of cosmetic advertisements, Version 1.0, November 2025, states that prior approval from a specialised board is not required and that the system runs on self-regulation, with the holder bearing full responsibility. The heaviest remedy available takes the product off the market rather than the creative off the feed, a different order of problem from a rejected ad. Claim wording is a separate rulebook again, and the makeup and cosmetics ads guide sets out what a cosmetic is permitted to say. Now put a gift set into that. Three notified products repacked into one festive box is a new outer presentation, and that box is what your ad photographs. The particulars a Malaysian cosmetic label has to carry, and the requirement that they appear in Bahasa Malaysia and/or English, come from the Guidelines for Control of Cosmetic Products in Malaysia, second edition, in force since 1 August 2022. An imported limited edition arrives with a sleeve printed in Korean, Japanese or Chinese and nothing else. A bundle assembled locally can bury the batch number on an inner carton nobody opens, or lose it when three cartons become one. Settle both with whoever holds the notification in November, before the artwork is printed and the shoot is booked, because by January the only fix left is a sticker. There is a commercial reason on top of the legal one. The woman buying a set is handing it to a relative who will turn the box over and read it, and a festive pack with no local label is the one that gets questioned in front of everybody. Answer that inside the creative rather than in a policy tab. Show the batch code and the seal on camera, say plainly whether you are the authorised seller or the notification holder, and photograph the box you actually ship rather than a supplier's render. In a packaging-led ad the proof is already in frame, so including it costs a second of screen time.
After the reunion dinner, the part most beauty brands switch off
A gift-set campaign has a natural stop and a natural second act, and most brands only plan the stop. The stop is real. By Friday 5 February the handover has happened or it has not, and an ad still promising delivery in time for the reunion dinner is selling something you can no longer supply. Set that end date at the ad-set level in December rather than planning to review it on the day, because the day falls inside a public holiday for most of the country. The fasting month is a different kind of boundary. Awal Ramadan 1448 is published for Monday 8 February 2027, a public holiday in Johor and Kedah, so Ramadan begins in the same week the festival ends. The two are consecutive rather than competing, which is easier than the years when they collide, but it does mean a red-boxed gift set has nowhere to drift. Commission the fasting-month creative as separate work before December, with its own claims, its own offer and its own audience, so it is ready on time and never borrows a frame from the festive edit. The second act is the part worth arguing for. The celebration does not end with the holiday. It runs fifteen days to Chap Goh Mei on Saturday 20 February 2027, and for a makeup brand that date has a completely different job to do. Nobody gives a gift set on Chap Goh Mei. They go out. So the creative flips back to what this category is normally good at: wear proof through a humid evening, a shade on real skin, a look built for a dinner rather than a box built for a relative. The gift frames are wrong there, and the shade-led ads you shelved in mid-January are right. Then there is the giver herself, who is the most interesting audience the season produces. She bought a set she was too careful to choose for her own face. She now knows your brand, she has handled the packaging, and she has never once used the product. That is an unusually specific person to write to in March: same brand, her own shade this time, no occasion attached. Tag her while the campaign is running rather than trying to reconstruct the segment in the spring. Before any of this is briefed, look at what the category ran last February. Which collections were announced by name, how the sets were photographed, how the drops were dated, which ads led with a delivery date. A searchable archive of Malaysian ads, such as AdPlay.ai, turns that into an afternoon's reading, by brand and by angle.

Frequently asked questions
When is Chinese New Year 2027 in Malaysia?
The reunion dinner falls on the eve, Friday 5 February 2027. The public holiday itself is Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February, with an extra day on Monday 8 February in most states, and the celebration then continues to Chap Goh Mei, the fifteenth and final night, on Saturday 20 February. Read all of those as published rather than settled. The lunar calendar moves about eleven days earlier each year, and the gazetted federal and state holiday lists are the binding version, so confirm them in December before budget is committed. For a gift category, though, the operative date is none of the above. It is the Friday, because that is when the box has to be in somebody's hands.
Should a Chinese New Year makeup ad be red and gold?
Use the cue, do not drown in it. Red and gold say festival faster than any headline can, but a red compact photographed on a red background disappears, and a gold set on gold cloth reads as texture rather than as a product. Pick one festive signal and let the pack do the rest: a red ribbon on a neutral surface, a gold foil detail catching the light, a lantern thrown out of focus behind the box. Keep the product edge-lit and separated from the background, because the shape of the object is what is being sold. Apply the same restraint to the copy. Auspicious phrasing is a real convention with real rules inside it, so borrow the wording your own community actually uses rather than running a slogan through a translator.
Can I run one Chinese New Year makeup campaign to a broad Malaysian audience?
Yes, and cutting the audience too finely usually costs more than it saves. DataReportal's Digital 2026: Malaysia report puts Facebook's potential ad reach in Malaysia at 23.0 million people, 63.7% of the population, with a further 16.1 million reachable on Instagram, so the room is large however you slice it. A design-led gift box does not check anybody's background at the door either. Office exchanges, gifts for in-laws and open-house hosting pull in buyers well outside the community celebrating. So write the creative meant for that community in its own language and imagery, and keep a second, plainer gifting flight running for everybody buying a present for a colleague. Read the two on separate lines rather than blending them into one number.
What do I do with my shade-matched products during Chinese New Year?
Keep selling them, to a different person. The gift buyer cannot choose a foundation for a face she has not seen, but the woman who wants to look right at the reunion dinner is buying for herself and knows exactly what she wears. Those are two audiences in the same feed in the same fortnight, so split them instead of switching the catalogue over. Point the gift-set creative at gifting and interest audiences, and point the base, brow and lip creative at past buyers and site visitors, where the shade question has already been answered once. The self-buyer also peaks later. She shops for the outfit and the face in the final week, closer to the eve, once the gifting traffic has cleared, so give that flight room to keep running past the courier cut-off that ends the other one.
What happens if a Malaysian cosmetics ad breaks the rules?
NPRA's FAQ on the control of cosmetic advertisements, Version 1.0, November 2025, sets out three regulatory actions. A warning letter directing removal or revision within a stated timeframe, which applies to print, online, social media and e-commerce alike. Cancellation of the cosmetic notification through the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, after which the product is no longer authorised for sale or distribution in Malaysia. And referral to enforcement agencies, including the Ministry of Health's enforcement division and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, particularly where the breach is online. There is no pre-approval step to shelter behind either. Malaysian cosmetic advertising is self-regulated, so nobody signs the creative off before it runs and every breach is found after the money has been spent. Note the timing risk in a festive window. A warning letter with a deadline attached is survivable in October and fatal in the first week of February.
Our limited edition comes from the regional office. Who is responsible for the ad?
You are, if you hold the Malaysian notification. NPRA's November 2025 FAQ addresses this directly: where an advertisement is published by the overseas headquarters or global brand owner and is beyond the direct control of the local Cosmetic Notification Holder, the holder is still responsible for ensuring local compliance. The FAQ even prescribes the steps expected, which are requesting removal, modification or geo-restriction so the ad is not accessible in Malaysia, and asking that future global campaigns either exclude Malaysia or comply with local rules. This matters more than usual on a festive drop, because regional creative tends to arrive late, arrive finished, and arrive carrying claims written for a market with different rules. Put the review into the drop schedule in November and ask for the master files early enough that they can still be changed.
How many shots does a makeup gift set actually need?
Fewer than you would expect, but specific ones. Five will cover almost every placement: the box closed as it will look in her hands, the box being opened, the tray with the pieces visible and counted, each item alone for carousel and dynamic, and a price card that reads in half a second. Shoot the closed box first and lead the edit with it, because that is the moment the buyer is picturing. In video the unwrapping belongs in the first three seconds, not after a logo sting. Cut everything to 9:16 and 4:5 so one shoot fills Stories, Reels and the feed without a second booking, and check the piece list at phone size rather than on a monitor. Budget one extra frame for scale, with a hand or a phone beside the set, because a box photographed alone on white could be any size at all.
Are the makeup ads on this page Chinese New Year campaigns?
No. They are representative angles from real Malaysian makeup and cosmetics advertisers, collected to show the structures this category keeps returning to: how a labelled brush set is presented, how a single named shade is sold, how a collection is announced, how a discount is framed. None of them is a Chinese New Year campaign. The festival-dated creative among them is a Ramadan sale offering free gifts on a contour and highlight stick, which is a discount mechanic rather than a gift-set one, so read all of these as construction rather than as a seasonal template to copy. How long an ad stayed live in a public archive is an artefact of when it was collected and never evidence that it performed, so do not read longevity as proof of results. For what any specific page has running right now, Meta's Ad Library lists its current ads.
