Chinese New Year Fashion Ads in Malaysia (2027)

Chinese New Year 2027 fashion ads in Malaysia: the Friday 5 February deadline, the exchange-by date almost nobody prints, and the size run a set lives on.

Updated December 2026 · Xanny Lee, CEO

Quick answer

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February in Malaysia, with a holiday in lieu on Monday 8 February in every state except Kedah (PublicHolidays.com.my, 2026). Reunion dinner is the eve, Friday 5 February, so the clothes have to be in the house by that Friday. The order is usually a matching family set, which ships complete or fails: one missing child's size loses all four pieces. So the creative carries two dates, the last day to order and the last day to exchange, and the content behind it wants to be indexed by early December 2026.

The clothes for Chinese New Year 2027 have to be in the house by Friday 5 February. The festival itself is the Saturday and the Sunday, 6 and 7 February, but the eve is when the family eats together, and it is the last day before three gazetted holidays. That one evening governs a fashion brand's January. It pulls the delivery deadline forward, it shrinks the window for swapping a wrong size to almost nothing, and it shuts the alteration shop, the packer and the supplier on the same weekend it shuts your customer's. This page is for the label, the footwear brand and the boutique planning that fortnight: what the shopper is actually buying, which of your stock can be photographed at all, and how to work back from the 5th.

Everything has to be in the house by Friday 5 February

Start with a number that argues against this page. Inside our own read of Chinese New Year festive copy, clothing and apparel indexes at 107 against a market rate of 100, while electronics and technology sits at 234 and home and garden at 224 (AdPlay.ai archive, 25 August 2026, one observed cycle). The festival does not lift a garment the way it lifts a television. What it changes is the shape of the order and the hard evening on the end of it. The dates are fixed and public. Chinese New Year 2027 is Saturday 6 February and Sunday 7 February, both national holidays. Because they land on a weekend, Monday 8 February is gazetted as a holiday in lieu in every state except Kedah, where that same Monday is Awal Ramadan 1448, a public holiday there and in Johor (PublicHolidays.com.my, 2026). Desks are back on Tuesday 9 February. Reunion dinner sits on the eve, Friday 5 February. Read that from the supply side and it stops being a customer deadline. The alteration shop closes. The packer closes. The supplier who could have couriered one replacement size closes, along with the printer doing your hangtags and the depot that would have moved any of it. For an office on a Monday-to-Friday week the gazetted block costs a single working day. For the people who finish and move a garment it costs more, because staff travel home for the reunion and leave early. Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu keep a Friday-Saturday weekend, so their last working day is Thursday 4 February to begin with. Ask every supplier for their own last useful day, in writing, in December, and plan the campaign behind the earliest one. One line of caution on the dates themselves. The Chinese ones are computed, so 6 February is firm. The Islamic one is sighted, so Awal Ramadan on 8 February 2027 is the published date and the gazette is worth re-reading before you commit stock or budget.

The second date on the creative is the exchange window

Most festive fashion ads publish one date, the last day to order. Publish two. Set the order-by date so a parcel lands on Thursday 4 February, one clear day ahead of the dinner, and put the last day for an exchange beside it. An exchange window is a footnote in an ordinary month and load-bearing in this one. A set is judged on a single evening, by four people standing in a row. A wrong size on any of them ruins the picture, and the counter that would have fixed it is shut from the 6th to the 8th. A parcel arriving on the afternoon of the 5th cannot be swapped before dinner. A parcel arriving on 30 January can. That gap is the difference between an order and a hesitation, and almost nobody prints it. Write it plainly on the artwork and on the product page: order by this date to arrive by 4 February, exchange until this date, and here is what happens to a request raised during the holiday. Then staff the answer. Somebody has to be reading messages on the 5th, and an exchange raised on the 7th waits until Tuesday the 9th, so say so instead of leaving a buyer to discover it. Two things change by geography. The round trip to Sabah and Sarawak is longer, so an exchange window that works in the Klang Valley closes too late over there and has to open earlier. And a counter can do what a courier cannot: if you have shops, name the ones trading through the weekend and let the ad hand an anxious buyer a person to talk to. If you cannot run any exchange over the holiday, publish that too. A promise dropped on 6 February costs more than the sale that won it. The point of the second date is to pull the risky part of the order earlier. A shopper who knows a swap is possible until the 2nd buys in January. A shopper who reads nothing about exchanges waits, sends a question you may not answer in time, or buys one piece to test you and never comes back for the other three.

Count the palette before you book the shoot

Palette is a design decision for eleven months of the year. In this fortnight it is a stock-take, because the colour convention decides which of your inventory can be photographed at all. So count first. List every SKU you hold in red, gold, orange, warm pink and gold-hardware neutrals, then ask whether four coordinated pieces can be built from that list in a complete size run. If they cannot, no photographer is going to fix it and no discount is going to hide it. Most Malaysian fashion catalogues hold more of the palette than the merchandising team remembers. The ads collected on this page include heritage red on Onitsuka Tiger's Mexico 66, Hijack Sandals styling the Flo Mary Jane against red, V-love's red flats with three swappable laces, Velthentic Clothing's red-soled brogues, Fehaute's Little Red Dress, Saoi's Lola gold-bow mules and My Ballerine's jewelled satin heels. Each is a representative angle from a real advertiser, collected in the archive and not a festive offer running today. Read together they show a red-and-gold sub-catalogue sitting inside an ordinary inventory, almost never styled as one group. Then plan the bench, which is the harder half. White and black are traditionally associated with mourning in Chinese custom, and China Highlights lists avoiding them among the festival's taboos (2026), so the black hero that carries your ordinary year has to sit the fortnight out. Benching is not pausing. Keep those pieces on their own line to a non-festive audience so the account does not go quiet for two weeks while the festive set does its work. Accessories are how a thin palette gets wider. A lace, a buckle, a ribbon, a bag: V-love's three swappable laces is exactly that mechanic, and it recolours a look without a purchase order. It also gives you a frame for the family member who will not wear red, which is a person every family has. All of this is settled months before the shoot, which is the uncomfortable part. The clothing and footwear division recorded annual inflation of -0.2% in 2025, against 1.4% for the basket as a whole (Department of Statistics Malaysia, Analysis of Annual Consumer Price Index 2025). Prices here are not rising the way the rest of the shopping basket is, so there is very little room to buy the season with a markdown. What you can decide is what sits in the palette and in what sizes, and that gets decided when the purchase order goes out, not when the brief is written.

One missing size ends the whole order

A single garment and a family set fail differently. A shopper buying one dress will take another colour, a size up, or next week's restock. A shopper buying four matching pieces for one photograph will not take three. If the eight-year-old's size is gone, the entire cart goes, and it goes to whoever has the run complete. So the unit this campaign sells is a complete run across four bodies, and it breaks first at the ends: children's sizes and the men's lengths, the two your buying team ordered most cautiously. Count those before you promise a set anywhere. Three things follow. Put the size run in the frame, a flat-lay of the four pieces with the sizes stated beside them, so a shopper qualifies herself before she clicks. Hold back the last unit of each size instead of selling to zero, because a set that arrives one piece short is a refund and a complaint in the same week. And pull a size from the creative the day it thins, which means somebody watches stock daily through the last fortnight and has permission to switch an ad off without calling a meeting. The format that carries this already exists in the category. Of the thirty-one fashion ads collected on this page, eight are carousels, and the longest run six frames for Designer Bridal Room and for Bata, five for V-love and Melissa (AdPlay.ai archive, 2026). None of the thirty-one styles more than one person, and the multi-piece offers among them are tiers on a single shopper's basket. Two name a festival outright: Bata's carousel for Kaamatan and B.Adore's Chinese New Year drop of the CALEN slides. A set ad is that same structure with a body per frame and the group in the last one, men's frames included, because the table has fathers and uncles at it and the men's frame is the one usually left out. Zeve Shoes' dress shoes and Arden Teal's full-grain leather are the pieces that finish a lineup. Judge the campaign accordingly. Cost per click says almost nothing about a set. Cart value, the share of orders that shipped complete, and the number of sets returned over one wrong piece are the three numbers that tell you whether the idea worked.

What a Fire Goat year actually puts in the basket

Every Chinese New Year hands the feed a free motif, and most brands spend it on a sticker: a gold goat outline dropped over an existing product shot. 2027 is a Goat year, a Fire Goat year in the sixty-year cycle, and the Goat years before it are 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2015 (StudyCLI, Year of the Goat, 2026). Two things in that are merchandisable. Neither of them is the outline. The first is material. A Goat year is the one year in twelve when the animal names a fabric, and wool, knit and bouclé are already what a reunion table's tailoring is made of. One of the ads collected here is a regular-fit Sacoor Brothers suit in 100% wool, an ordinary product in an ordinary February and a thematic one now. Malaysian weather sets the ceiling, so read this as texture in the frame and fabric named in the copy. Nobody is buying outerwear in February. The second is an audience you can actually build. Anyone born in a Goat year turns 72, 60, 48, 36, 24 or 12 during 2027. That is an age list, not an interest, and it is the one targeting instruction the zodiac hands a fashion brand. Where a family keeps the custom of marking a person's own zodiac year in red, the purchase is small and specific: red socks, a red belt, a red cord, a red bag. The buyer is frequently not the wearer, which turns the copy from fit to gifting and lets a cheap item convert beside a much larger cart. Attach it, do not campaign on it. A red accessory offered above a spend threshold, or as the third item in a tiered set order, lands it in the cart where it belongs; alone it is too cheap to hold an ad set open. Measure it as attach rate on set orders. And write it as an offer anyone can ignore. Plenty of families keep the custom and plenty do not, and no ad should imply a year goes well or badly according to what somebody bought. Before any of it is briefed, read what the category did last February: who styled a whole family instead of one hero garment, who led with the palette, who put a date on the artwork. The free Meta Ad Library covers what a page is running this week. Last February takes a searchable archive of Malaysian fashion ads, such as AdPlay.ai.

Friday 5 February 2027
The last working day before Chinese New Year 2027 shuts the country. PublicHolidays.com.my lists 6 Feb (national), 7 Feb (national) and 8 Feb (national except Kedah, which takes Awal Ramadan that same Monday), so every state is closed for three straight days and reunion dinner falls on the Friday night itself
PublicHolidays.com.my, 2026
Monday 8 February 2027
Awal Ramadan 1448, a public holiday in Johor and Kedah, landing the day after the second day of Chinese New Year. In this cycle the Chinese gift window and the Malay fasting month run consecutively rather than competing, and both dates are moon-sighted and published rather than certain

Year-on-year growth in Malaysian retail sales in specialised stores in February 2026, to RM14.8 billion, with clothing named among the drivers and festive spending during Chinese New Year plus early preparation for Ramadan named as the causes: the same back-to-back pair that repeats, tighter, in February 2027

RM151 a month
What an average Malaysian household spends on clothing and footwear each month, 2.7% of mean monthly consumption expenditure of RM5,566, so a matching family set bought for one named day is roughly a quarter's worth of the category's household budget in a single cart

Frequently asked questions

When is Chinese New Year 2027 in Malaysia, and which days are public holidays?

The festival is Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February 2027, a national holiday on both days. The Monday after, 8 February, is gazetted as a further Chinese New Year holiday in every state except Kedah, standing in for the weekend the festival fell on. That same Monday is Awal Ramadan 1448, a public holiday in Johor and Kedah (PublicHolidays.com.my, 2026). Most workplaces reopen on Tuesday 9 February. The Chinese date is stable enough to plan against: the calendar is lunisolar, it adds a leap month to stay in step with the solar year, and the new moon is computed astronomically, so the festival swings inside a band in late January and February. It is Wednesday 26 January in 2028. Islamic dates are the ones that walk about eleven days earlier each year and are confirmed by moon sighting, which is why the Awal Ramadan date is a published date and not a certainty.

When should Chinese New Year fashion ads go live in Malaysia?

Well before the festival week, and the market's own behaviour says how far. Measured on the language advertisers actually write, Chinese New Year copy in our archive switches on around eight weeks out, peaks four weeks before the festival at 8.2% of that week's new Malaysian ads, and has fallen to 0.5% the week after it (AdPlay.ai archive, 25 August 2026). That is one observed cycle, so read it as a shape and not as a rate. Four weeks before 6 February 2027 is the second week of January. Pages and content want to be indexed before the creative ramps, so publish by early December 2026, put set creative live from the second week of January, and hold a slice for the final push to the order-by date.

Should Chinese New Year ad copy be in English or Chinese?

Both, and the split is closer than most briefs assume. Across the Chinese New Year window in our archive, 4,335 Malaysian ads carried the English abbreviation CNY and 3,430 carried the Chinese characters for new year, with 1,474 spelling out Chinese New Year and 296 using the Chinese phrase for lunar new year. Malay festive phrasing is a small tail: 100 ads said tahun baru cina and 66 said angpau (AdPlay.ai archive, 25 August 2026). An ad can carry several phrases, so those counts are never added together. For a fashion brand the practical reading is to write the hero line twice instead of translating it once, and to treat Chinese-language creative as a main variant. A greeting is either correct or absent.

How do I stop a set ad selling a size I cannot ship?

Treat the size run as the campaign's inventory instead of the SKU. Put a floor under each size, a unit or two, and have the catalogue drop the set out of dynamic ads the moment any piece falls below it. Pull the affected frame from the carousel the same day. Give one person the authority to switch a set ad off without a meeting, because a refund raised in the last week is a complaint you cannot resolve until the counters reopen on 9 February. If a size breaks late and the ad is performing, the honest fix is to change what you are selling: move the offer to a three-piece set at a stated price and say which sizes are left.

What should the ads say in the last three days before the festival?

Whatever you can still keep. Once the order-by date passes, the delivery promise comes off the creative and the same audience sees shop hours, a walk-in offer and directions, written plainly, the way the category already runs a fixed ringgit saving for the first hundred customers through the door. Keep one thin retargeting line for anyone who viewed a set and did not buy, pointed at the shop and not at the parcel. Anything that still says it will arrive in time is now a complaint being scheduled for the week after the holiday, which is the week your team is least able to answer one.

How much of a Malaysian household budget does a family set take?

Enough that it is a considered purchase. The month itself is not short of money: Malaysian retail trade turned over RM70.07 billion in February 2026, the month Chinese New Year fell that year, 7.7% above February 2025 (Department of Statistics Malaysia, Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade, 2026). The household basket is the constraint. Mean monthly household spend on clothing and footwear in Malaysia is RM151, or 2.7% of a mean monthly consumption expenditure of RM5,566 (Department of Statistics Malaysia, Household Expenditure Survey Report 2024, released 8 October 2025). Four coordinated pieces are a large share of an annual category budget arriving in one basket, which is why the objections that kill these orders are about sizing and arrival before they are ever about price. Two things follow. State the running total plainly, because a shopper adding a fourth piece wants to see where she lands. And set any spend threshold at a level a real set actually reaches, not at one that flatters your average order value.

Does Awal Ramadan on 8 February 2027 change a Chinese New Year fashion plan?

It changes how it ends. Awal Ramadan 1448 falls on Monday 8 February 2027, a public holiday in Johor and Kedah, so the fasting month opens on the same Monday most of the country is still on the Chinese New Year break, and Hari Raya Aidilfitri follows on 10 and 11 March (PublicHolidays.com.my, 2026). Both are moon-sighted, so treat them as published dates. None of that calls for a different Chinese New Year campaign, but it does mean the festive ads have to stop cleanly. Give every set ad an end date at the ad-set level, because a red-and-gold family set still serving in the second week of February is talking into a different season with nobody at a desk to catch it.

Which colours should a Chinese New Year fashion ad avoid?

White and black. China Highlights lists both among the festival's taboos, because the two carry mourning associations in Chinese tradition (2026), and a moody monochrome treatment can land as condolence in a week meant to be loud. That is awkward for a brand whose catalogue is mostly black, and there are two workable answers. Shoot those pieces with a red or gold accessory carrying the frame, or keep them running to a non-festive audience on a separate line and let the palette SKUs take the festive budget. It is also worth counting properly before you panic: orange, warm pink and gold-hardware neutrals all read as festive, so the usable palette is normally wider than red alone.
